Physical readiness training done right must include technique training prior to imposing a demand of performance on soldiers. And it now does thanks to the H2F initiative. Technique is the foundation of performance on any level, and most importantly, it is the most direct way to actually prevent movement related injuries.

…”When it came to physical readiness training, it was not the average PT session. With each workout, we focused on different muscle groups and did exercises tailored to every component of the ACFT. More importantly, we focused on correct weight lifting techniques and form, something that can easily be overlooked without proper training. Our fitness coach also showed us effective ways to row, bike and even run using the Pose method, which is a systematic approach to running in order to reduce injury.”

THE HISTORY

Running has always been part of military training. It is an essential activity that is part of virtually everything else soldiers must do on regular basis. And it’s been known for years, that as an activity, running is also the most dangerous athletic movement solely due to the amount of injuries that soldiers sustain. More than 2 out of 3 injured soldiers face injuries from running. However, running itself is not the issue.

THE PROBLEM

Soldiers are trained and taught how to do everything else, but, when it comes to running, they were always left to figure things out on their own. Until now.

THE SOLUTION

Health and Holistic Fitness, or H2F is a big initiative by the Army to revamp training protocols. One of the major updates in the new doctrine is the addition of Running Skill (Pose Method) in FM 7-22 (Chapter 7).

Running Skill training is now available, on demand – forcewide – through the ArmyIgnitED program. Individual Soldiers can watch Pose Method running skill training videos online.

POSE METHOD® OF RUNNING + ARMY TRAINING

Members of all branches of the military have participated in the The Pose Method of Running courses since 2008. On October 1, 2020 the updated US Army Holistic Health And Fitness Field Manual (FM 7-22) and Holistic Health And Fitness Drills And Exercises Army Techniques Publications (ATP 7-22.02) were published and they included the Pose Method as the method for the running skill program and running technique drills.

The Pose Method of Running training course and the Certified Running Technique Specialist credential are aligned with the Soldier Common Core (MOS) and P5 Master Fitness Trainer (ASI).

Running skill training is an important initiative in the Army. The physical readiness domain focuses on a particular goal called “movement lethality,” which is the ability to destroy the enemy on the battlefield and successfully return home. Movement lethality is an essential skill for every soldier to have, regardless of their specific military occupational specialty, as every soldier has the potential to be deployed.

Running is considered to be #1 athletic activity in the number of non contact injuries reported, experienced and treated annually. That makes running the most dangerous sport. “The most dangerous thing you can do in the Army is not jumping out of planes – it’s to go for a run”

The running test is part of the physical fitness evaluation, and is commonly failed not due to a lack of trying, but lack of skill.

THE PROBLEM

Running Skill is not officially taught at any stage of training throughout a service member’s career. Running Injuries are a big problem in the Army, costing 577 million per year, and more than 2 out of 3 injured soldiers face injuries from running. Training service members in Running Skill retroactively (after Basic Training or AIT) has not been a feasible option until now.

…I would take soldiers that previously were running 20 min 2-miles, and within an average of 2 weeks, they were running 16 min 2-miles.

– COL Charles Blake

THE SOLUTION

Providing the Running Skill training to the NCOs enables them to train soldiers with better results. Running skill training is a uniform approach that can be scaled and implemented immediately. Improving running skill in the Army is an important initiative. At any given day, there are approximately 46,000 soldiers training to become a member of the U.S. Army. The Army continues to adapt and innovate, protecting the health and safety of its people while maintaining the readiness of the force.

…we had a myriad of soldiers who were plagued with lower extremity overuse injuries. What are we doing that’s causing this to happen? I realized that if the way we do aerobic fitness in the military is running, then we need to know how to do it right.

Running is one of the most injury-prone activities in the Army and is the most common training activity.

Dr. Nicholas Romanov, founder of Pose Method of Running, and his team came to Ft. Stewart, GA this past week and conducted a two-day block of instruction for 40 Dog Face Soldiers. Those service members will now be qualified to conduct running clinics for their respected unit, continuing the training of proper biomechanics, technique and ultimately reducing injury while improving readiness. They will be qualified to take the online certification and add Certified Running Technique Specialist to their ERB.

Pose Training class not only highlighted my mistakes with running but demonstrated how to correct them and others Soldiers with minimal to no equipment. I am excited to see more installations support Pose Method of Running training and the positive outcomes that follow.

The 43rd Adjutant General Battalion’s Fitness Training Unit hosted a Pose Method Specialist Certification Course Oct. 26 and 27, taught by the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training in an effort to help prevent running injuries.

According to Lt. Col. David Feltwell, CIMT command physical therapist, Army Physical Fitness Doctrine primary developer and Master Pose coach, it’s all part of the Army’s new approach to holistic health and fitness.

…although everybody can run, they don’t know how to create that movement or coach it to someone who is having trouble.

Feltwell said this new system includes training and testing that is “cutting edge” and will have a doctrinal base supported and spread across the enterprise.

“We’re in the early stages of writing and completing that doctrine and of pushing out that system to the force,” he said. “This training block is the proponent office moving out ahead of that to see how well we can train and teach this to our Soldier population especially in the initial entry where it might have the biggest impact on Soldiers.”
