Running Skill Training
Physical Readiness Training Program Requirement
Physical Readiness Training Program Requirement
Physical fitness is a critical component of Soldier readiness, unit readiness, and Army readiness. It is essential that all Soldiers, regardless of MOS, are physically and mentally prepared to deploy, fight, win, and return home. Physical readiness training is also the largest producer of non-fatal injuries, with most due to running. Ankles, feet and knees (lower extremities) are the most common areas affected.
Health and Holistic Fitness, or H2F is a big initiative by the Army to revamp training protocols. One of the major updates in the new doctrine is the addition of Running Skill (Pose Method) in FM 7-22 (Chapter 7).
FM 7-22 and ATP 7-22.02 use the Pose Method® as a method for the running skill program and drills. The Pose Method is a standard approach to running skill development and injury prevention. Using the Pose Method® for running skill improvement leads to less deviations from the optimal parameters of what’s considered efficient technique and movement, making it a simpler, easier to replicate and scale, and a better controlled process.
Lower extremity (running related) injuries greatly impact soldier health and U.S. Army readiness, as well as prominently figure in medical disability discharges and long-term, service-connected disability costs.

Commanders and staff will establish training programs consistent with AR 350-1 and FM 7-22. Training that addresses both the physical and nonphysical aspects of Soldier readiness is considered by senior Department of Defense (DOD) leadership to be essential to mission success. All leaders are trainers. Leaders include officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers, and those Department of the Army (DA) Civilians in leadership positions, trainers and educators throughout the Army.
The most important component of the governance process is compliance. Leaders at all levels must comply with policy, regulation, doctrine, and intent of H2F to enable Soldiers to reach the goal of H2F: optimized performance.
After conducting a block of instruction, commanders who want to progress running skills should schedule Running Drills two times per week for fifteen to twenty minutes during endurance activities. Running Drills should precede or follow running activities and may be performed collectively or individually.
Soldiers perform the drills at least once per week to develop proper form. As with all physical training exercises, consistent adherence to precise execution provides optimal results.
Running instruction has challenged the U.S. Army for the last decade. Running related (lower extremity, overuse) injuries are the most common concerns of Soldiers leaving IMT.
FM 7-22 update released in October 2020 introduced the most significant change made in the last decade – Running Skill training requirement as part of the physical readiness training program.
The Military Services will implement and monitor physical fitness programs to ensure all Service members maintain a level of physical readiness necessary to successfully perform their duties in a manner that reduces the risk of fitness-related musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries.
